I am an experienced counsellor and psychotherapist. I regularly supervise, teach and train in various contexts, including health and educational settings, the workplace and private practice. Over the last 23 years, I have worked with young people, adults, groups and couples. Throughout my counselling and psychotherapy career, I have maintained a successful, ongoing private practice. For eight years, I was employed by city and county councils as a youth counsellor working with the 11 - 25 age group. I have worked in a further education college as a student and staff counsellor, then as a University Staff Counsellor and more recently as a Specialist Infertility Counsellor in a licensed clinic within an NHS hospital. I was co-tutor on an Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling for 3 years at a college in Coventry and I also did some teaching in Birmingham. For the last 12 years I’ve ran a monthly CPD group within a counselling agency.

I have worked with a wide range of problems, including various work-place and HE issues, such as stress, redundancy, problems with managers, change of job description, exam pressure, financial issues etc. Infertility counselling often included many aspects of anxiety, sense of failure, grief and shame for the majority of clients. Other areas I have experience in include relationship issues, child protection issues, anger, cultural issues, sexuality, identity issues, physical, emotional and sexual abuse,, domestic violence, self-harm, depression, grief, shame, OCD, bi-polar, anxiety, confidence, low self-esteem and couples work etc.

My private practice is a mixture of long and short term work, with both couples and individuals, also supervising other counsellors. I thoroughly enjoy working at depth, being with each person and being part of their coming to more awareness about themselves and their process, enabling them to have more choices in how they make contact with themselves and others. Short term work is usually more focused and goal orientated.

In my role as an Infertility Counsellor I saw people for both therapeutic work and for emotional assessment, information and advice for areas such as egg sharing, sperm donation etc. My role required me to be familiar with all the different processes in the Unit, so that I could discuss at depth and with understanding the emotional side of treatment with patients. I was lucky enough in this position to work both long and short term with my clients. A significant amount of my work here was with couples and was usually qualitatively different from couples I see in private practice. The couples here wanted to be together and the struggle was sometimes to understand that they were not always in the same place at the same time.

At The University my role included maintaining proper counselling boundaries within the workplace setting. Being a Staff Counsellor increased my understanding of workplace issues. I supervised our placement trainee. As part of my role I also participated in Staff Training in appropriate subjects at all levels.

I’m committed to ongoing personal and professional development and this is reflected in the fact that for several years I was a member of a Continuing Professional Development Group with an international trainer, in relational psychotherapy. I feel that my core model, Gestalt, is an approach that is suited to working with a wide range of people of all ages. I have a theoretical grounding in a number of therapeutic models. I’m comfortable with both brief focused work as well as longer-term work. I also attend various specialised workshops in order to increase my understanding of specific areas, such as family dynamics, working with couples, mental health, cultural diversity, child protection issues, spirituality and sexuality etc.
